Joan claims to have been unprepared for university level scholarship, and that when she first noticed other students taking notes in lecture classes, she assumed that they were "writing letters home."

Joan received an "A" on her Henry James term paper. Joan's English professor ultimately placed her original "blue book" in the archives of UCB's Bancroft Library, although this same professor once told Joan that he thought she showed more promise as a writer of criticism than a writer of fiction.

Joan lived in the Tri-Delta sorority house for a year in 1956, and Inocencio/Siegel were able to photograph the view from what had once been Joan's "sleeping porch." When Joan saw that view again (in the slides), she was quite moved.
